City Overview :

Set high in the ranges of the Western Ghats, in Kerala, is the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. The park has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir meanders around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a perennial source of water for the local wildlife.

What to See :

Herds of elephant and sambar, gaur and wild pigs wander down to the lakeside and can be observed from the launches that cruise the lake. In March and April, during the driest period here, the animals spend a lot of time near the lake and the elephants can be seen bathing and swimming in the reservoir.
The Periyar National Park is also called by the name 'thekkady'. The best season to visit the Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is from the months of October and June.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary : The most renowned destination is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady, one of India's major sanctuary areas. The drive to Thekkady itself is enchanting as the road winds through tranquil countryside, rich plantations and thick jungles. The sanctuary offers a lovely and comfortable way to see the animals via boat rides on the man-made lake, which the wildlife areas encircle.
Periyar in Kerala is known for its beautiful wildlife sanctuary, set around the Periyar Lake. Home to around 800 elephants and 40 tigers, as well as many rare plants, birds and small animals, the Periyar National Park and its green surroundings, are a destination that tourists are sure to enjoy visiting when they travel to Kerala.
